PERCEPTION VS. REALITY

Some people when they look at this picture may think the following about me:

•Insecure and pressured by the beauty industry/society to wear makeup, dye and style my hair, wear nice clothes etc.

•Fake or superficial

•Poor role model for my daughters or nieces

•Attention seeking

What this picture actually represents is:

•Self care, one of the only ways I had access to self care for almost a year and a half. A half hour or so of quiet time to put on some makeup for no reason other than to make me happy.

•Self love. Do I like myself without all the bells and whistles? Yes, but I also love to enhance what I think is beautiful about myself.

•Simple pleasures. I absolutely love trying out new eye shadow palettes, mascaras, lipsticks. I love perfecting different ways to wear my makeup or my hair. It makes me happy, simple as that.

So, perhaps in some people’s eyes enhancing the beauty you have with bells and whistles is a poor role model for the younger generation, but I think teaching those around us to prioritize self care, self love and to enjoy life’s simple pleasures isn’t a negative thing. Even if sometimes those three things are about wearing lots, or a little, makeup, styling your hair and getting dressed up. At the end of the day, whatever makes you happy, less stressed or joyful is all that matters and fuck everyone else’s judgements and theories about you.
